1) Re potting for Bonsai Maintenance

Steps of Re-potting -

a) Wet the soil completely.
b) Cut the copper wires tied up with plant and pot.
c) Shake or pat the pot so that the plants root gets separated from the pot wall. If required, use a knife to separate it from pot.
d) Take out the plant and remove the extra root. Don't cut the main root.
e) Now do the potting as you have done in previous section for new plant.
IMPORTANT :- Re-potting is a important step in bonsai care / bonsai maintenance, do the Re potting only during early spring or monsoon.

2) Trimming and Pruning for Bonsai Care

Some of the tree can be pruned throughout the year, but if you are not sure then do it only in spring and monsoon.
As a routine bonsai maintenance the roots and branches require regular trimming. Root pruning and top and tip pruning of branches is the basic of bonsai care. This also helps the plant to grow in desired direction.
During trimming of branches, always cut the branch just above the nodes, otherwise you will have a branch without leaf. Take care in this process so that you are not short of leaves and branch.

is to be done only during evening in shade. Slowly shake the pot and try to take the plant from the pot. Remove / wash the roots to have a clear visibility. Now cut the side branches and small qty of main root if required. In no circumstance, more than 30% of the roots can be cut in one instant. Re-pot the tree as instructed in previous sections. 3) Watering bonsai

This is a main step in bonsai care and most of the bonsai dies because of over or under watering.
Almost all the plants require watering on alternate days except during monsoon days. During summer you may have to water every day. For good bonsai maintenance watering is to be done when the top layer is dry. This you can checkup by touching the top soil or by inserting a niddle.

After potting and re potting, water as instructed in previous section (take a bigger pot filled with water and keep your bonsai pot in it).
As a part of your regular bonsai maintenance, make sure that the drainage hole is clear to pass excess water. During watering try to put the water in a way that the leaves gets washed.
Make sure that no time your bonsai is standing in water. As a good bonsai care practice, if you are going out for 3-4 days, cover the root and bottom portion with a wet cotton cloth to retain moisture.

4) Manuring bonsai

For proper bonsai maintenance plants should be provided proper food and please note that by starving a plant you cannot develop a good and healthy Bonsai.
Use most water soluble manure once in a month. Since bonsai pots are small in size, therefore over dosing will kill the plant. Lot of Bonsai manures are available in horticulture stores. However organic / natural manures are good for bonsai. Most of the artificial manure contain Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potacium, magnesium, calcium etc. Your store owner can advice you a suitable manure, if you tell him your category of plant. To be safe as a beginner use organic manure.
